Occupational Therapy

Lauren Hall

I am a candidate for a doctorate in occupational therapy from Northern Arizona University, and am honored to have the opportunity to represent NAU throughout this upcoming year. My passion has always been centered around pediatric special needs with a particular interest in autism spectrum disorders as well as other neurodevelopmental disorders. I even taught science for a semester at a private high school for teenagers on the spectrum!

Before entering the Northern Arizona University doctoral program in occupational therapy I was following a career path in wildlife biology. My former career path allowed me to come in contact with communities living in remote, sensitive areas, without access to health care. The shocking disparities I witnessed led me to my current endeavors in occupational therapy. Social barriers and lack of resources often interfere with the independence of sensitive populations and present issues of occupational injustice.

If I could express in words the number of ways children with autism and other developmental differences have enriched my life, I could write the world’s longest book! What I will say is how privileged I feel to have been welcomed into the homes of so many unique and exceptional families, to learn from each other how to participate in life as joyfully and skillfully as possible. As a pediatric occupational therapist the majority of my experience has been in providing services within home-based early intervention settings.

The University of Arizona LEND program interests me because it will introduce me to new knowledge and ways of thinking from other professions to better equip me to provide a more comprehensive and valuable service to families and their communities. My professional goal is to use my clinical background as an occupational therapist to work with reserachers in developing and implementing clinically relevant studies with results that provide information that can be applied directly to the daily lives of families.

Jessica Salyers, OTR/L, MS

The AZLEND program will allow me to learn more about diverse populations, collaborate with other healthcare professionals and visit healthcare facilities within the state. Moreover, I am more eager to offer more efficacious treatment approaches to the children and families with whom I work. The AZLEND prgram will promote my leadership abilities and skills in neurodevelopmental disabilities. I am an occupational therapist at Department of Rehabilitation at The University of Arizona Medical Center and an AZLEND Faculty for Occupational Therapy.
